The film is a fictionised account of the life of Rani Padmini, a legendary queen mentioned in Padmavat. According to Padmavat, she was the wife of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the ruler of Mewar. In 1303, Alauddin Khilji, the Turkic ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, laid siege to the Chittor Fort in Rajputana. According to Padmavat, Khilji led the invasion motivated by his desire to capture Rani Padmini.

Padmavati is an upcoming Indian period drama film directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, jointly produced by Bhansali and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. It is currently scheduled for release on 17 November 2017. Deepika Padukone gets whopping amount of Rs 13 crore for Padmavati, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor take home Rs 10 crore each. playback singer Shreya Ghoshal tweeted about singing a song composed by Bhansali for the film.[4] Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan were Bhansali's initial choice for the roles of Rani Padmini and Rawal Ratan Singh, however they refused to share the screen together.[5] Many media outlets speculated that Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, who played the leads in Bhansali's Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013) and Bajirao Mastani (2015), were finalized to play Alauddin Khilji and Rani Padmini in the film. Their co-star from the previous films, Priyanka Chopra was also in consideration for playing the titular part. However, in April 2017, Chopra denied her involvement in the film
